Geophonica™ is a framework for building custom location-based apps. Geophonica apps use the phones we carry everyday to create enhanced experiences of our natural and built environments.
Geophonica ties audio, images and text to real-world locations. When a user gets close to a location, content is activated and displayed.
It is currently available on Android, with plans for iOS in the future.
Custom maps are plotted with available locations, which can be scripted to be hidden or revealed as the experience unfolds. Maps can be whimsical or representative, and content can be rooted in fact or crafted from fiction. Destinations can be strung together to tell a story, form a puzzle, act as virtual information kiosks, be standalone experiences... and more!
Geophonica offers several features to create an immersive experience for the user, including sound locators (think "warmer-colder" but with sounds that grow louder as you get closer), narration or ambient sounds played while moving between destinations, and more.
Geophonica is designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, and we work to remove barriers to participation. Locations can be activated remotely (physical access is not required), mobile data service is not required, older model phones are supported, and Geophonica apps are compatible with accessibility tools, such as screenreaders. Geophonica is also able to support multiple languages.
